Time After Time..... Math?

Do any of you remember taking timed math tests when you were a young child?  Joe and I do not.
They start them with timed addition and subtraction in 1st grade!  By 2nd grade, Evie had mastered the 40 problems in under the 2 minutes that was required.   That following summer vacation is when we noticed her first tics.  If you'd like to re-visit that moment, it's here --->

Enter third grade.  New tics, sports, tics causing lack of focus, some OCD and guess what?  The timed math tests are now multiplication.    So I chalked the timed test failures to not wanting to study multiplication.

Fourth grade.  The timed math tests are insane now.  All that's required is to complete 25 problems in under 1 minute.  She's struggling in a bad way.  I mean really struggling.. Remember 2nd grade when she could solve 40 ADDITION in 2 minutes?  (that's 20 in a minute for those not wanting to use their math skills at the moment)  :)  Now she only gets like 11 finished in a minute.  ADDITION!  Same goes for subtraction.

Something is wrong here.  First of all, let me say that I despise and highly disagree with timed tests.  It's stressful and causes anxiety.  It teaches you to have to do everything fast.  If you know the answer, you know it.. why does it have to be a freaking race?  So I did some research today and found some interesting articles on what math professors at prestigious colleges think about timed math tests in general.   If you get time, please please read this article...
Timed Tests and the Development of Math Anxiety
The passages that stood out were, "Timed tests have been given to young children in school districts in the United States with the best intentions, but with negative consequences for many years. "  And....
"recent research conducted with children in 1st and 2nd grade, found that levels of math anxiety did not correlate with grade level, reading level, or parental income. For the most capable students, the research confirms, stress impedes the functioning of their working memory and reduces achievement. Research conducted at Stanford revealed that math anxiety changes the structure and workings of the brain."

I also got to thinking about how Evie's recent diagnosis includes Attention Deficit Disorder and wondered  what experts had to say about timed tests and ADD.   Again, just what I suspected..   Here's the passage that stuck out to me as 100% accurate,  " If a student is given a worksheet with 100 math problems, they are immediately overwhelmed by all 100 problems. When a child has ADHD, their mind tries to process all of the information at once and they convince themselves that this is an impossible task. This is why teachers and parents often find themselves frustrated because it seems as though the student is not trying."

So I decided to test this theory and gave Evie a blank sheet of paper to cover all of the rows except the row that she was working on.  The objective was to keep her focused on the task in front of her and to not have the other problems distracting her.   I also told her that she was NOT being timed, not to stress but to just work through one problem at a time.  I immediately saw the strain leave her forehead, the tension in her hands loosen and heard the sigh of relief.  She then worked through it in a timely manner.. I secretly used a stop watch and noticed she was on problem 17 at the 1 minute mark, so there was certainly an improvement.

I emailed her teacher and told her about this and am hoping that Evie can be accommodated in some way.  I don't want her to hate math because of anxiety.  That just seems so pointless!

I know that some of my blog readers are teachers.  I'd be interested in hearing your opinions, thoughts and problem solving solutions that have worked for your students.  What gives with these timed tests?  Do you agree with their intended purpose or outcome?

I'm in the mindset that as long as Evie knows the material, I could care less if they give her a poor grade on the timed stuff.. and if we need a doctor's note to make the situation work for us, I'll be on that phone first thing Monday morning!  :)

Play Ball!

Another spring/summer season of softball is here! Evie is in third grade so she's in machine pitch softball. No more pitching from the coaches. Tonight was her first game and first experience with the machine. While she didn't hit the ball, her swing was great.. just need to work on getting the timing right. And you'd know that I got video!

Happy 7th Birthday, Evie!

What a fun day!
Evie had her 7th birthday party today and it was a "fashionable" event.
We had lunch complete with champagne glasses filled with fruity punch, dancing to some of their favorite songs.. (see below for video), they designed their own flip flops that turned out beautiful, played a game called, "Pass the purse" where there were gifts for everyone, and got fashion makeovers! Makeup and hair was provided by myself, my friends Jessica and Hope plus my sister in law Katie. The girls left with cute purses filled with accessories.

A good time was had by ALL! Even Joe got a major kick out of it.. and the girls were AWESOME! Evie's got some fashionable, cool friends!

Hope took a massive amount of pictures for me, as always.. I'll post my faves!!!
Enjoy the video of the girls doing the "Cha Cha Slide" and the pics!

Christmas Snow!

We had plenty of snow this Christmas.
(The snow on our patio table)

Today the kids had a chance to get out in it. Not for too long, though.. with wind chill it was only 16 degrees. Under all their clothes, you'd never know it.. I had them very bundled up! Although their little hands got cold fast so we rolled some snowballs and went down the slide a few times and came in for a warm bath, hot lunches and relaxation under Mommy's heated blanket. Enjoy the videos!

Like how Evan falls off the slide at the top? LOL

Christmas Eve

Happy Christmas Eve!
Today the kids and I had a festive day at home. We started the day off with a lovely breakfast from McDonald's! (Mommy's favorite! And the kids love their hotcakes and sausage, too!)
Joe got off work early in the afternoon and helped us make a Christmas Village.
We used coconut for the snow, sugar cones covered in green icing for the trees.. every type of candy you could think of and colored marshmallows for the decorations.. and we made another gingerbread house. We even made a pond with blue tinted icing and put goldfish crackers in it for the snow man cookie to fish for!
The kids decorated cookies for Santa as well.

We all opened our gifts to each other.. Mommy got a nice heated blanket, (I'm always cold!) Daddy got a portable cd player from Mommy and warm cozy slippers from Evie and Evan. Evie got her very first scooter! She loved it and learned how to use it very quickly! She was all over the house tonight!

Daddy got some awesome video!

And Evan got his first drum-set! You'd think he had been playing for years the way he picked up those sticks and hit each indivdual drum with such rhythm!

Daddy got some rockin' video!

Both kids are in bed for the night awaiting Santa's visit! Happy Holidays!

Evie's first tournament!

Evie participated in her very first martial arts tournament today!
She did a fantastic job!

Here she is with her friend, Chloe and Miss Melanie

I took 4 videos of her being judged and receiving her enormous trophy for "Best Intensity"..

We are so proud of you, Evie! Keep up the good work!

CAMO BELT!

She did it again! Another belt promotion! At this rate, we'll have ourselves a black belt in no time!

She has really grasped the concept of how important learning the techniques are to her. Her jumping front kicks tonight were phenomenal!

Here's the video of Evie receiving her camo belt.. you can hear Mr. Master's booming voice when he yells Evie's name and then you can see Miss Melanie not wanting Evie to have her camo belt.. (means she's going on to a new class and Mel doesn't want to let go of her leaders).

And here she is with her new belt and Mama tightening it. Camo looks good on her!

We're gonna need a few more computers in the house!

Evan has decided that it's HIS turn at the computer! Evie already has it 50% of the time playing on Noggin.com, YoVille, and Pirates Online... (with me taking the other 50% during the day to facebook (YoVille), blog, and play Pirates Online).

Joe gets a little time in the evenings after he gets off of work, provided I'm not being a computer hog... and Evan, not so much.

Today, he started hitting the keys, like he usually does.. pulling up browser windows and other windows that I didn't know existed. So I figured, "why not?" I pulled up a preschool, "hit the keys and watch what happens" website, and he had a great time.. and appreciated being treated like a big kid.

Little Rocker

Evan likes to dance. What 18 month old child doesn't? But I could never figure out just what music he seemed to favor. Well, I found it. I was cleaning the house one day and was listening to some music and the only song that seemed to move him was AC-DC's "Back in Black". You gotta love a kid who appreciates good music!

Finishing off Christmas with Family

We just got home from a lovely weekend trip to Cincinnati with family.
The entire clan was there!

Here are some pics and videos from the weekend!

Stuck!

Poor Baby Bubba..
Evan took the toys out of the entertainment center and loosened a shelf so that it fell down.. then climbed right in! I was in the other room folding clothes and imagine my suprise when I found him this way...

It was all fun and games until he couldn't figure out how to turn around and get out. You can hear him in the video pleading with me to help him. LOL

SNL Digital shorts

OMG! If you missed SNL this past Saturday, you missed the best short that they have ever had... I actually fell asleep during SNL so I told Joe to hit record because I thought it was going to be a good episode.. he must have missed this part as well.. or he would have told me about it.. I just watched it this morning and peed myself!

Now.. it's slightly adult, not too bad.. but adult humour... totally my sense of humour. And keep an eye out for two cameo appearances in it from my man, Justin Timberlake!

A class with a World Champion Extreme Martial Artist

We had an amazing morning! Today is Newberry's 20th Anniversary teaching Martial arts and they are having Open House. Evie's Tiny Tigers had an hour long class with 4th degree black belt Mr. Von Schmeling, a world champion. He was awesome! And he brought one of his students with him, (Mr. Harley) who was amazing as well.. I forgot my camera and my video camera :( and that sucks because they were doing flips and jumps over kids heads and other extreme martial arts stuff. The kids were in awe and were great students. I thought Evie did very well.. she didn't have the "wiggles" and stayed focused the whole time. Mr. Von Schmeling also noted that in front of the class. I was so proud ;) All of the kids were fantastic, though.. not just Eve.

I took a pic of Evie and the Masters with my camera phone, so the quality is poor. And I scanned Evie's autographed picture of Mr. Von Schmeling.
These guys are world reknowned, so it was pretty exciting!

And then when we got home, Evie was practicing flying side kicks on my kitchen island.. and I looked over and saw Evan doing it, too! It was pretty funny, to say the least! I had to take a video..

I think I have another martial artist on my hands!

Halloween Party

We had our annual Moms and More Halloween Party yesterday and Evan had a great time. Evie had school this year, being a big Kindegartener now, so she wasn't able to attend.
Arrrr! Evan and I are Pirates!
Evie is too.. I'll get some pics up of her on Halloween.
Sorry bout the shadow on this pic.. I loved Evan's smile so I kept it, but the flash somehow cast a funny darkness above us.

ARRR! Gettin' some ale from the Tavern (actually, the play kitchen but for Pirate's sake, a tavern)

Getting into mischief Eliza Firehazzard (that's my Pirate name) and the little Scurvy Pirate (that's what Evie and I call him)

"What do you do with a scurvy pirate? What do you do with a scurvy pirate? What do you do with a scurvy pirate? Make him walk the plank!"

A quick video of Evan wanting to play in the cozy coupe at the party.. But Calvyn (Curious George), is in it.

And here's what happened right after he couldn't get into that little car

He's mastered the art of throwing a fit... I think it's funny that they all want the same toys. For the most part they play by themselves at this age. It's cute to see them interact.

Evan's friend, Evan (yes, I meant to type Evan twice.. he has a buddy with the same name) The costume contest winner, The Man with the Yellow Hat!! So adorable!

Rhylan as the infamous Mike Wyzowski!

Little zebra Garren with my friend, Wendy.. great smiles, you too!

I'll get more pics up soon!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
